To have complete protection for your vehicle, you need both common types of auto insurance. They cover different types of damage, so it’s important to understand the distinction between them. Here is a brief description of each:

  • Collision Insurance can help pay for damage to your vehicle if it is involved in a collision with another object. This type of coverage may help cover the cost of repairs or even the replacement of your car.
  • The events covered under comprehensive insurance are different from those that collision insurance protects against. Comprehensive pays for damage to your vehicle caused by events such as theft, vandalism, or hail, which are unrelated to collisions.

How your car was damaged determines whether you need comprehensive or collision insurance. If you hit another car or a stationary object, you’ll be covered by collision insurance. If your car is damaged by vandalism, fire, or a natural disaster, you’ll be covered by comprehensive insurance.

Why get comprehensive insurance:

Things happen, and we can’t always predict or control them. That’s especially true when it comes to driving and our vehicles. But whether it’s a hailstorm or a deer on a country road, there are things we can do to be prepared for the unexpected—like having comprehensive auto insurance.

Why get collision insurance:

Even the best drivers can’t control other vehicles on the road, which is why collision insurance is essential. If you’re ever in an accident with a driver who doesn’t have insurance, your own collision insurance will help cover repair or replacement costs for your vehicle.

If you own a car, having both comprehensive and collision insurance is always wise. While there are some instances where drivers might be able to get away without it – for example, if you own an older vehicle that has fully depreciated, but for most vehicles it is recommended as accidents can happen anywhere.  If you have a newer car, and you frequently drive long distances, you should give serious thought to getting both coverages. Also, anyone who couldn’t afford unexpected costs like repairing or replacing their vehicle should also get both coverages.
